Why do we get hooked on the series?

There is something about series that glues us in front of the TV with wanting more. It’s like an addiction. We need another and another dose – get involved with the lives of fictional characters fictional lives. We invest our time and feelings in something that does not really exist. And yet we are hooked. Why?

Where am I headed?

From the first paragraph, it might look like I will try to persuade you from wasting your time. Relax, certainly not. This would be way too hypocritical of me. This is the first post in my new section – Watching TV – and you will find here the list of series I have watched and my view on these.

Don’t worry – I hate spoilers so you can breathe out, keep reading my reviews and not worry about being stripped from discovering the storylines on your own if you find a series to watch or currently watching. If you have already seen something – we can compare our reflections on them.

How I discovered the series?

I think it’s the most uninteresting story – my granny watched some, when I was with her – I saw them too and although I never planned to keep watching something in them got to me and before I knew it I kept an eye on TV plans to be home or at granny’s at the right time. Yes, I am that old! I actually had to watch shows on TV at the time TV people showed them or not at all. Scary ain’t it?

I think one of the first ones was Santa Barbara and Bold and the Beautiful. Along with several Mexican series and some of them were almost identical – different roles, some minor relationship changes. As I got older I needed something I could relate to more.

Looking back in time

The teenage years are difficult times – so many things happening and changing, and so many questions about oneself, the world, and human relationships. As some of you might have already understood I lived in ancient times – before the internet and streaming service. So all the questions younger people could just Google or checked from Youtube – I had to figure out on my own.

So TV series about young people and teenagers because it was relatable and gave some answers or heads ups, what might come around. From this time there are several series that for now have kind of been forgotten, but back then were popular and still hold a special place in my memories.

Some that do come to mind

  • Saved by the bell – I think it was one of the first series I saw about school kids, battling with social life and school balance, parents and friends, going through personal changes, and emerging new emotions, but in a fun way. Educational about growing up processes with comedy cover.
  • Felicity – I loved this girl! I truly loved and enjoyed her journey to adulthood and it gave an insight into university life and adjusting to a new community, creating friendships, and assessing totally new situations and feelings. Discovering the world on her own being away from home and her parents.
  • Dawson Creek – This might be a bit more known show, mainly because it was one of the firsts (if not the first) hit Katie Holmes starred. In some ways, this was the most relatable series for me – a group of small group school kids in a small town. Small town limited their options for entertainment or friends – they had to make work what they got. This a great tutorial on how to accept things you have no control over and make the best of them.
  • Buffy the vampire slayer – This might have been my first meeting with a vampire theme and this small, fragile girl kicked ass. What I loved about it and still do – unlike most shows the main characters, who seemed to be born super fast/strong, etc – Buffy worked out! It was another school kids’ show, with a twist of fantasy and filled with growing-up hiccups, love-hate, and secret lives.
  • Ally McBeal– I think this was one of the first series I stumbled on with a smart, beautiful woman in the masculine field and everything that comes with it all the while finding her way as a young woman and everything covered in great comedy sauce! There are still some great “inside jokes” I sometimes use, but they mostly go to waste because no one remembers. Ally is actually the first series I binge-watched.

But on we go

I could go on and on about this, but I have to be real. No one likes too long posts and I know, you have other blogs to read also. After you have read all my posts course 😉 So I will leave all of them for the next post. Check in here and in some time, you can find the next 5 picks.

As I am writing this post I am catching up on fresh episodes of “Dead to me” on Netflix. When I started watching this I expected something else. Not sure what exactly, but it turned out to be more. As the series went on it became more and more about this strange complicated friendship which at first glance shouldn’t be happening at all. But it did, and the conflicted feelings of shouldn’t and desires to keep fighting with each other.

I do appreciate your reflections and thoughts, I love how people can watch or read the same thing and see completely differently. Just remember while commenting: No spoilers! I haven’t moderated any comments so far, but I will moderate or delete spoiler comments to keep this subject spoiler free.
